Video essays on screenwriting and film directing.
This is a channel featuring unabashadly formalistic analyses of cinematic style and form.
Here you'll learn to see the invisible beauty of great filmmaking. You'll learn to pay attention to how actors move, how cameras move, how the screen is used, how talented directors make scenes visually interesting, how great dialogue is written, how a great plot is structured.
I defend that, regardless of artistic intent or personal interpretation or cultural influence, there are objective aspects in stories and visuals that make movies succeed or fail as art, and by examining shots and screenplays we can find out what they are.
And we'll have some laughs along the way.

Learn to See (and LOVE) Invisible Directing
A video essay about the brilliantly invisible directing style of "Sleuth" (1972), directed by the great and greatly underrated Joseph L. Mankiewicz, based on the play by Anthony Shaffer and starring Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine and Alec Cawthorne.
Joseph L. Mankiewicz is one of the greatest screenwriters of all time ("All About Eve" just might be the best script ever written) but if you try to find information about his visual style you'll be met with nothing but disappointment. Critics predominantly call his technique unremarkable and overly dependend on dialogue.
I believe, however, in what I see, not in what I'm told. And when I see Mankiewicz's films I see a master of staging and fra...

Ernst walks into an aspect ratio store and says "Yes Please!"

A video essay about the great 1921 German anarchic comedy "The Wild Cat" (Die Bergkatze), directed by no other than master craftsman Ernst Lubitsch and starring Pola Negri in her best role. We'll analyze the film's inventive use of masks to manipulate its screen shape and - I dare say - aspect ratio into whatever Ernst feels is most appropriate for the moment, achieving humorous and aesthetic r...

Why It's a Classic: The Night of the Hunter

A video essay about Charles Laughton's macabre fairy tale for adults about a mass murderer who simply wants a doll. Here I analyze the elements that led "The Night of the Hunter" to be elevated across movie history. Its universal Good vs. Evil narrative aided by its highly unique chiaroscuro visuals. This is, after all, an extremely unusual film, and it was one even upon its release. During the...
Forget All You Know About Camera Movement

A video essay on camera movement but instead of focusing on tracking, panning, tilting, dollying, handheld and all those other technical types I'm sure you know backwards, my dear viewer, we'll treat the subject from another point of view. In his book, "On Film-Making", Alexander Mackendrick wrote that camera movement can be split into two kinds: Motivated and Unmotivated. Based on this dichoto...

I Claudius is a classic
This is an underappreciated movie. To me this movie is about integrity and it's my favorite western.
Glad there's an Italian film on the list, and one cited with honourable mention. Personally I'd chosen Ladri di Biciclette by De Sica instead of Leone's western. Then I'd go for Cabiria"s night instead of Fellini's La dolce vita. But your channel your choices. There is one that I 100% agree, and surprised you considered as one of the Greatest. That movie bizarre surreal shocking yet beautifully shot scripted acted with a Caravaggio cinematography has somehow changed the way ( then and young ) how I would think of the word Masterpiece. The cook, the thief his wife and her lover...always thought it was the movie of the 80s.
ALL of the modern long form television miniseries' owes a debt to I'Claudius.
Great run down on the direction in this superb series. You'd hope that this series would be shown in film school(s).
I saw this in America when I was seven. I watch it every year or so.
Consensuses .
Fascinating .
5:09 is that Patrick Stewart? It IS!😊
Wow… my Dad was a major Bogart fan, so we watched all his movies; Sabrina has always been an absolute favorite. Such a treasure!! Bogart, Hepburn, and William Holden, plus the terrific cast, writing, and directing. Thank you so much for this video! I never planned to see the remake, because I figured it was about as likely to succeed as a remake of On The Waterfront, and you have confirmed I was correct. 😊😊
imagine seinfeld shot w claudius-level blocking hehe
Best TV ever made.
You have totally contributed to me seeing movies in a different way. Thank you
Love this video, Wiseman.
Nolan intentionally has crappy shot composition. He wants his story to take over. He’s talked about this. He mostly gets meaning from cross cuts.
This film has an audacious concept and pulls it off in spades. A character study grappling with existential dread and presented in a manner that allows the viewer to feel it. An extraordinary achievement in filmmaking.
Farewell My Concubine. Gallipoli. Sophie's Choice. Breaker Morant.
I, Claudius is one of the greatest shows ever. I watch it start to finish at least once per year. Just amazing.
the ending🤣
The first movie was already mid, the sequels only got progressively worse.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
This was outstanding! Your best analysis that I have seen. Thank you, I learned a lot.
This is an excellent video. I actually learned something.
Absolutely love your other videos but this one is really misinformed and bizarre
Now that I know a little bit more camera angles, and storyboarding I see a lot of Akira Kurosawa’s influence in this.
""The remake is ashamed of being a comedy." Noticed that too with Charade and its remake The Truth About Charlie, where they replaced Cary Grant with Mark Wahlberg,
'Rome' is a prequel to 'I,Clavdivs'
so the snake at the start of blackadder is a nod to this! ahhhh
Alternate to your very fine "Greatest" list. 1.Tootsie. 2.Goodfellas (Scorsese going into the nightclub through the kitchen, the best shot in movie history. 😁) 3.Lawrence of Arabia. 4.Unforgiven 5. Raging Bull 6. Inglorious Basterds 7. A Fish Called Wanda. 8.Jaws (It has some of the best use of music ever used on film.) 9. Twelve Angry Men. 10. Kill Bill Vol 1(Kenneth Brannaugh's movie is good. Not that rewatchable though.)
unpopular opinion: I, Claudius' story is kinda weak
Licorice Pizza 2021 PTA.
No film is perfect and I do wish Peter Jackson could have put his horror movie past behind him. But no, he had to carry it for a while 👄 Carry it for a while 👄 Carry it for a while👄
Share the looooad…
Surprising Macbeth is still not on blu-ray. I guess it is not worth preserving.
Brilliant
I hate that you made me realize the council of Elrond is a lazy scene. I hate it even more that you gave me the choice to not watch the video. I should've taken the bless of ignorance.
This makes me want to watch one of my favorite films again - Ninotchka.
This is awesome, but I can’t find the film anywhere. I imagine it’s on RUclips but I wonder if the dialogue cards are in English!?! Anyone know?
That shot of the lady revealing the servant by swaying aside is wild. So beautiful!
Before I found this channel I loved movies but I knew nothing about directing. Your videos have changed how I watch movies for the better.
Has anyone ever come across this screenplay? I searched and searched on the net, cannot find it anywhere. Any luck @moviewise?
Big woody
Thank you Moviewise for being a teacher. For being my film school. I have made 3 short films so far. And always wanted to improve. I'm working on my 4th and I'm taking a ton of notes from your videos. I wish I would get an opportunity one day show you how my current project will turn out. In Empty Space book, Peter makes a case in favor of critic. He claims theater is incomplete without critic. I believe was referring to genuine critics like you.
Great, cogent video. We all leveled up.
Not crazy at all about this list.
Great video, as always! You can always tell if a film director has theatre chops because of the blocking. And actors from the theatre, too, develop a sense for crossing and depth while performing, and you can certainly see that in Caine and Olivier. But I have to say, as an old theatre guy myself, you've got your lefts and rights backwards! lol
Another excellent video. Thank you. I try to incorporate what I learn into my own videos. I am a rank amateur of course. But I try and your videos are invaluable.
Please do a video on William Wyler, who auterists often scoff at too much, especially the ones from the French New Wave. The TSPDT page on him shows that.
William Wyler is a top 5 director in my book! I mentioned his Jezebel and The Big Country many times but a whole video about him is something I must seriously consider.
@@MoviewiseHappy you liked my suggestion. The way that auteurists devalued his reputation is really unfair.
I, Claudius is a forgotten British TV classic. Blackadder being second. 😉
I had to go back and watch The Godfather get kicked off the screen about four times. You're a hero, man. A goddamn hero.
I like you European guys making videos like these, don’t get me wrong, but your editing and sense of humour feel terribly antique
